Though they were all expert builders, they weren't designers. What I didn't understand was that I was asking the wrong people. In the years that followed, I asked a couple of contractors for their advice but I struck out each time. I could see that we had enough square footage to do what we needed to do but I didn’t have a clue how to spatially plan it so it made sense. I spent so much time thinking and dreaming about how we could change our house to fit our young family’s needs, but I didn’t yet have the skills to convert my dreams into reality.
